About Chimney Sweeping
Why do I need my chimney swept?
A clean chimney allows gases, smoke and particles to escape your home safely and efficiently. Soot and creosote build up naturally with use and can restrict the flue, reduce draw and — in serious cases — cause chimney fires. Regular sweeping keeps your fire burning efficiently, saves you money on fuel and is often a requirement of your home insurance and stove warranty.
How often should I have my chimney swept?
HETAS recommend at least twice a year when burning wood or bituminous coal, and at least once a year when burning smokeless fuels. As a general guide, the best times are just before the start of the heating season in autumn and again after a prolonged period of non-use in spring. If you're unsure, give us a call and we'll advise based on your specific appliance and usage.
What happens during a chimney sweep visit?
Richard will place a protective dust sheet around the fireplace area and temporarily seal the opening to prevent soot entering the room. The chimney is then swept using traditional rod-and-brush methods or a modern rotary power sweeping system, depending on your flue type. On completion the area is thoroughly cleaned and hoovered. All that's left is the faint smell of soot! A certificate is then issued on the day.
Do I need to do anything before the sweep arrives?
Yes — please make sure your fire or stove has been completely cold for at least 24 hours before your appointment. If the appliance is too hot to work on safely, a call-out charge will still apply. Please also clear the area around the fireplace and remove any items from the hearth so Richard has space to work.
Will my room get dirty during the sweep?
No. Richard takes great care to protect your home — dust sheets are laid, the flue is sealed during sweeping and everything is hoovered thoroughly before he leaves. The vast majority of our customers say the area is left cleaner than when he arrived!
What is creosote and why is it dangerous?
Creosote is a tar-like substance that builds up inside chimney flues when wood is burned — particularly wet or unseasoned wood. It is highly flammable and is a leading cause of chimney fires. Regular sweeping removes creosote deposits before they become a hazard.
Certificates & Insurance
Do I get a certificate after my chimney is swept?
Yes — every chimney sweep carried out by RJL Chimneys comes with a certificate issued. This is an industry-recognised document accepted by home insurance providers as proof that your chimney has been professionally swept.
Will my home insurance be affected if I don't get my chimney swept?
Potentially yes. Many home insurance policies require evidence that your chimney has been professionally swept and certified. Failure to maintain your chimney could invalidate a claim in the event of a chimney fire. Our certificates satisfy this requirement.
Do I need a certificate for my stove warranty?
Yes — most stove manufacturers require annual sweeping and servicing as a condition of their warranty. Our sweep certificates satisfy this requirement.
Log Burners & Stoves
Can you service my log burner as well as sweep the chimney?
Absolutely. We offer a combined chimney sweep and log burner service. This includes checking and cleaning the glass, inspecting the door seals and rope, removing and cleaning the fire bricks and baffle plate, and a smoke draw test. Everything is checked to make sure your stove is burning safely and efficiently.
How often should my log burner be serviced?
We recommend a full service at least once a year, ideally before the start of the heating season. If you use your stove heavily through winter, a mid-season inspection is also worth considering.
What wood should I burn in my log burner?
Always burn seasoned or kiln-dried hardwood with a moisture content below 20%. Wet or unseasoned wood produces significantly more smoke and creosote, burns less efficiently and can void your stove warranty. Look for the Ready to Burn logo when buying firewood.
My log burner glass keeps going black — why?
This is usually caused by burning wet wood, running the stove at too low a temperature, or an airwash problem. During a service visit Richard will check the airwash system and advise on the best burning practices to keep your glass clear.
Can you repair my log burner?
Yes — we can carry out many common stove repairs including replacing door seals, rope, glass, fire bricks and baffle plates. If your stove needs more significant work we'll advise you honestly on the best course of action.
Drone Surveys & CCTV Inspections
What is a chimney drone survey?
We use a DJI drone — operated by our CAA registered drone pilot — to carry out a detailed external inspection of your chimney stack, pot and cowl from above. This gives a clear view of cracks, damage, missing mortar or other issues without the need for expensive scaffolding or cherry pickers. Drone surveys start from £130 + VAT.
When would I need a chimney survey?
A survey is useful if you've noticed signs of damage such as falling debris, damp patches, efflorescence (white staining on the chimney) or if you're buying a property and want to check the chimney condition before moving in. We also recommend a survey if your chimney hasn't been used for several years.
Do you carry out CCTV flue inspections?
Yes — CCTV inspections allow us to view inside the flue to check for blockages, cracks, debris or bird nests. These are particularly useful when sweeping a chimney that hasn't been used for a long time or following bird nest removal.
