You may have been using your stove or fire since the weather turned colder without any issues. It’s quite possible to use a fireplace for months or years without having the chimney swept. This is because the chimney will continue to work (with decreased efficiency) and you may not notice. However, eventually, the chimney may become too damaged to use, or could result in a chimney fire.
Some people think that it only needs sweeping every couple of years or 'it has a liner so doesn't need sweeping' - this couldn’t be further from the truth.
A build up of soot and creosote can also lead to chimney fires. It only takes a fire (heat), a dirty chimney (fuel) and airflow (oxygen) and it only needs one chance.
You can reduce the risk of fire substantially by getting the chimney swept.
